The Outside Look presents

The Outside Voice.

Tell us where the work is sticking. We are listening for the things people running small organisations actually need to say.

A standing listening project

The official version is rarely the whole story.

The Outside Voice is where The Outside Look listens deliberately to people doing the work of running and working in small organisations.

Not for polished answers. Not to manufacture proof for a predetermined idea. For the useful detail: what is taking attention, what has already been tried and what might genuinely help next.

01 / Say it plainly

What is really taking attention?

We are more interested in the work as it feels than in a tidy business answer.

02 / Look across it

Where do the patterns sit?

One response is a view. Many responses can reveal a pattern, a contradiction or a question worth testing.

03 / Report honestly

What can the evidence actually tell us?

We will be clear about where the evidence is strong, where it is thin and what remains uncertain.

Your answer becomes part of a wider picture.

No sales call follows. This is listening activity, not a disguised consultation form.

STEP 01

Name what is happening.

Take a few minutes to describe the pressure, friction or question that is most present in your work.

STEP 02

We look across the responses.

We compare what people are telling us with each other, with credible research and with what we are seeing more broadly.

STEP 03

We publish what is useful.

Headline findings remain public where that serves trust. Deeper analysis may inform The Outside Review.

Your voice is evidence. Not a lead.

We will analyse responses alongside others and report findings in aggregate. We will not use this exercise to create an artificial path into consultancy.

  • We listen for answers that may challenge our own assumptions.
  • We report patterns, not personal stories.
  • We separate evidence, our interpretation and unresolved uncertainty.
  • We do not ask you to solve the problem before you are allowed to describe it.

A few useful things to know.

Who is this for?

People running, leading or working in small organisations: sole traders, small businesses, charities, community organisations, social enterprises and partnerships.

What will you do with my response?

We will analyse it alongside other responses to identify patterns, tensions and questions worth taking seriously. Any published findings will be reported in aggregate. Please do not include confidential personal information that you would not want us to hold.

Will I receive an answer to my particular problem?

No. The Outside Voice is research, not a bespoke diagnosis or advice service. Its purpose is to build a more honest shared picture of what is happening.

What is the thank you at the end?

People who complete a listening exercise receive a participant rate for The Outside Review: TOL’s evidence-led editorial library. It is a thank you for contributing, not a requirement to buy anything.

Listening Exercise 01

Say the useful thing.

Take six minutes. Add one honest piece of evidence to the wider picture.
